Meet Blake Petkau

How were you introduced to running? By whom? How long ago was it?

I was introduced to running by my parents and I started doing the December Strides Streak. I was introduced to running when I was 5 years old.

Name a few of your favourite places to run in Calgary. Why do they stand out for you?

Some of my favorite places to run are around my community where I live and around the Glenmore reservoir because I enjoy the trees and flowers around me as well as taking in the views of the water.

What do you get from running and why do you like it?

What I get from running is that I can explore different areas of the city and feel like I have accomplished something such as running a race. I like running because it gets you physically fit and helps with mental focus and stamina as well as building your endurance.

What running goals do you have? This year and long term?

Some running goals I have are that I want to complete a 10k in 50 mins or under.

Pay it forward: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received from a parent, coach, or mentor about running? OR got your own advice? Share it with us!

The best advice that I have received is that sometimes you just need to suck it up on big hills,  push through and "get er done"

Meet Sydney Beres

How were you introduced to running? By whom? How long ago was it?

I was introduced to running by my amazing Mother. Watching my Mom run marathons, and half-marathons encouraged me to try running. Ever since then, about six years ago, I haven’t been able to put down my running shoes. From running with my Mom and doing half-marathons to running with my friends, running has become a huge part of my life.

Name a few of your favourite places to run in Calgary. Why do they stand out for you?

My favourite places in Calgary to go running are around the reservoir and on the pathways around Eau Claire Market. I love being able to run on the pathways around the reservoir and past Heritage Park because you are able to breathe the fresh air in and connect with nature.  Starting at Eau Claire and running on the pathways is so beautiful and I love the camaraderie you feel as you run past other runners and walkers.

What do you get from running and why do you like it?

Running helps me to let go of stress. Breathing in fresh air and getting my heart rate up really helps me to clear my mind. Going for a run allows me to refocus my energy and be more productive.

What running goals do you have? This year and long term?

My goal for running is to continue to get faster and strive for better times, especially my 5KM times. My long term goal is to run a Marathon, particularly with my Mom. I can’t wait to run my first full marathon with my Mom.

Pay it forward: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received from a parent, coach, or mentor about running? OR got your own advice? Share it with us!

My best advice for running is do what works for you; Run when you have time, with friends, by yourself, or with a furry friend. Everyone who runs is a runner, it’s just about going out and doing your best.
